A friend from Carleton recently pointed out Walkscore.com, where you give them an address and they give you back a score (from 0 to 100) that claims to reflect its walker-friendliness.
My apartment in Baltimore – 75, “Very Walkable”. A little high. Probably because they got the local businesses hilariously wrong. (Dear Walkscore.com: While “Afrikan World Book” is indeed a bookstore, it’s not a general purpose bookstore, and walking there might get you shot. Similarly, “Wonderland Liquors”, while technically within walking distance, is definitely not a place you should ever walk, along with most of the rest of the businesses on your list. Also, the Lyric Theatre is, as it turns out, not a movie theater. Although I’m told their operas are very nice all the same.)
Home in Louisville off Bardstown Road – 94, “Walkers’ Paradise”. Accurate.

Home in Fidelity St, Carrboro NC – 82 “Very Walkable”. Pretty accurate.
Although I think I’ll consider Weaver St. the closest grocery store, as opposed to the suggested Short Stop Food Mart (at the fuel hose).
Home in suburban baltimore got me a 23 – Car Dependent. Very accurate.
